The Best Food Trucks in San Francisco and Where to Find ‘Em

Excerpted from July 31, 2019 article by Daisy Barringer

San Francisco loves its food trucks. We have food truck parks, like SoMa StrEAT Food and Spark Social, as well as Off the Grid, a roaming food truck festival with over 60 events every week. Not to mention all of the trucks that park around town hoping to feed hungry diners who want good food, but don’t have the time, money, or inclination to go to a restaurant.

Of course, with so many food trucks parking in our neighborhoods, it’s hard to know which ones to hit up for maximum satisfaction… until now. We tried to let you know where you can find most of them, but the thing about food trucks is, well, they’re trucks. They move around, y’know? So be sure to check their websites for updates and locations.

We told you to skip Lobsta Truck’s chowder and that’s because if you’re going to enjoy creamy comfort in a bowl from a food truck, it should be from Sam’s Chowder Mobile. This New England-inspired food truck makes a version that is hearty and satisfying (and perfect for dunking the Old Bay fries). That being said, we still prefer to satisfy our clam chowder cravings at Pier 39 ‘cause of that sourdough bread bowl. Instead, we’ll hit up Sam’s for fish and chips, fried shrimp po’ boys, and popcorn shrimp, three classics that are sadly hard to find decent versions of in SF. Sam’s got it dialed in though. Everything is fresh, flavorful, and fried to perfection. And we would like to note that while we love Lobsta Truck’s lobster sandwich, Sam’s is also excellent.

Where to find it: Check the website for the schedule. It’s often at an Off the Grid around the Bay, including Fort Mason (5 to 10pm every Friday from March to October) and the Presidio Picnic (11am to 4pm every Sunday from April to October).

The Bay Area’s 20 best food trucks

It has been only five years since Off the Grid held its first food-truck gathering at Fort Mason, four years since San Francisco made it easier for trucks to park on city streets, and three years since anyone in the Bay Area has attended a wedding that didn’t end up in the parking lot of some banquet hall. San Francisco and San Mateo counties currently each have more than 100 permitted food trucks, and there are many more in Alameda County, where loncheras first lined up along Oakland’s International Boulevard in the 1980s.

In a city where most iPhone screens are cluttered with delivery apps, San Franciscans still leave their desks for lunch when a food truck pod sets up nearby. Off the Grid has competition from food-truck clusters such as Moveable Feast and Bites Off Broadway, but it continues to be the major player, with more than three dozen events every week. There are permanent truck pods — several of them — under the Central Freeway.

Today’s food trucks have killed off the myth that mobile food vendors were all roach coaches. Yet the boom has not flooded the streets with amazing food. Most of us have stood in line for 20 minutes to receive a compostable clamshell stuffed with limp fries drenched in meaty glop. We’ve bitten into our share of starch-plus-fat wrapped in a flour tortilla. (The two food groups that seem to thrive in the truck age: tacos and, somewhat surprisingly, pizza.)

Five years in, the Chronicle Food Section thought it time to honor 20 trucks that offer something greater than the average. (Note: We primarily evaluated trucks that circulate in Marin, San Francisco, Alameda and San Mateo counties.) They may serve a type of food you can’t get anywhere else — or they may simply be the trucks we gravitate to over and over again.

Sam’s Chowder House wins Travel + Leisure 2014 SMITTY® Award for “Best Overall Use of Social Media by a Restaurant, Food Truck or Market”

Press Release, June 2014

Half Moon Bay restaurant honored for its standout campaigns highlighting best and most innovative use of social media and selected as one of 12 businesses nationwide to join Facebook Small and Medium Business (SMB) Council

HALF MOON BAY, Calif. – (June, 2014) – Sam’s Chowder House is proud to announce that the restaurant has won a national Travel + Leisure SMITTY® Award for “Best Overall Use of Social Media” in the category of Best Restaurant/Food Truck/Market.  The Travel + Leisure SMITTY® Awards  (Social Media in Travel + Tourism™ Awards) recognize the most innovative use of social media in the travel industry nationwide, and 2014 winners included well-known companies such as Virgin Atlantic, Four Seasons Hotels, and Expedia, among others.  The distinguished jury of nine digital insiders and travel industry experts included Al Roker (NBC’s Today Show co-host), Mike De Jesus (Twitter Head of Travel and Tourism) and Rob Torres (Google Managing Director of Travel).  The judges received entries from around the world and named winners and runners-up in 30 categories, based on their innovative, informative and compelling social media programs, and ability to connect with and engage their fans. Award winners are featured online now and will be featured in the July issue of Travel+Leisure magazine.  An awards party celebrating the winners and judges will be held on July 9 from 6-9pm at the Rooftop of the Refinery Hotel in New York City.

“When our first Sam’s Chowder House opened in 2006, social media was in its infancy,” says Julie Shenkman, co-owner of Sam’s Chowder House.  “When we launched a second Sam’s seven years later, our Facebook page was open for business months before the restaurant was even open.  Today most of our guests are using social media, and it’s the cornerstone of our marketing strategy.  We connect with our seafood-loving community online to extend the restaurant experience, so our guests feel special until they can come back and dine with us in person.  It’s really changed the dynamics of the business – with social media we can easily engage with our guests, whether they are locals who live down the street or visitors from faraway places such as Hong Kong or Italy.”

In addition, Shenkman was also selected by leading social media company Facebook to join the social network’s first 2014 Small and Medium Business (SMB) Council, after the engagement on the restaurants Facebook page caught their attention.  Comprised of 12 small businesses from different industries across the U.S., the SMB Council met in March of this year at Facebook’s headquarters in Menlo Park, Ca., to help build a small business community, boost advocacy, and provide feedback on how the social network can improve the experience for business owners.  Sam’s was also chosen by Facebook last year to be one of three national companies featured in a success story video to highlight “best practices”.

The restaurant uses a variety of social media platforms, which include Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest, for menu updates (fresh local crab has arrived!), education (how DO you properly crack and eat a whole lobster?),  special offers (it’s Dollar Oyster night!),  event promotion (come to our Wine Lover’s Dinner!), building relationships (please welcome our newest sous chef!), a feedback channel (what’s your favorite dish?), information sharing (hurry – it’s 80 degrees here in Half Moon Bay), current events (The Prince and Princess of Monaco just dined at Sam’s…really!), and to nurture ongoing relationships with guests.  Social media is also used for menu management across multiple sites, for recruiting new staff, and to connect with potential diners from its fleet of Sam’s ChowderMobile food trucks, which travel the Bay Area serving the restaurants famous Clam Chowder, Sam’s Lobster Rolls, and catering private events.

While serving social media to over 30,000 fans across the globe, the two Sam’s Chowder House restaurants and four mobile food trucks serve over 600,000 guests in person annually.  Join Sam’s Chowder House and Sam’s ChowderMobile online communities to stay up-to-date about latest news, menus and special offers on these social media channels:

Sam's ChowderMobile - Fresh Seafood Truck and Catering

Sam’s Chowder House Announces First Mobile Gourmet Seafood Truck in San Francisco Bay Area: Sam’s ChowderMobile

Press Release, June 2009

Providing a fresh solution in challenging economic times, Sam’s ChowderMobile brings award-winning, affordable seafood directly to customers, for lunch and dinner, corporate and private group “on-sites”, beach clambakes, and major events

Half Moon Bay, CA – (June, 2009) Sam’s Chowder House in Half Moon Bay, California, the first high volume mainstream restaurant to go “mobile”, now delivers award-winning gourmet seafood throughout the San Francisco Bay Area in Sam’s ChowderMobile. A year in the making, Sam’s ChowderMobile was the result of tremendous customer demand for fresh, simply prepared seafood. This new mobile solution will deliver lunch and dinner and high quality events directly to customers.

“Though our business at Sam’s has continued to soar, with an 18% increase year-to-date over last year, we are hearing from our corporate customers that it’s more and more difficult for them to justify holding business off-sites, even though there is a business need,” said Paul Shenkman, Proprietor of Sam’s Chowder House. The nationally known oceanfront seafood restaurant opened in October of 2006 and now serves an average of 22,000 people a month. “With Sam’s ChowderMobile, we can bring a ‘mobile seafood shack’ with outstanding food right to companies at their location – we call them ‘on-sites’. When you remove travel time and employee travel expense, and add a reasonably priced menu, the entire event is much more cost-effective. We can do the same for private events such as weddings, birthday parties, and family reunions or community events such as street fairs, sporting events, or Farmers Markets. We can even hold Lobster Clambakes right on the beach, or your home or office.”

“We are always looking for a way to bring our groups together to do business and teambuilding without breaking the bank,” said Caroline Donahue, Senior Vice President of Sales at Intuit, Inc. in Mountain View, CA, recognized as America’s most-admired software company. “With Sam’s ChowderMobile we don’t have to worry about travel costs and logistics, and time away from the office – it’s an easy and convenient solution for us. We plan to use it for our first ‘on-site’ sales event later this month.”

Sam’s ChowderMobile Menu and Events

Sam’s eco-friendly menu includes the same fresh daily seafood that has won Sam’s Chowder House numerous awards, such as Top five “Best Sandwiches in America” by NBC’s The Today Show for the restaurants Maine Lobster Roll. Other menu items include Sam’s popular Fish and Chips, Crab Louie Salad, Clam Chowder and Fish Tacos, as well as Key Lime Pie for dessert. Prices range from $4.95 for a Fish Taco, to $9.95 for Fish and Chips to $14.95 for Sam’s Lobster Roll. Nationally known Executive Chef/Partner Lewis Rossman, who has been featured on NBC TV, “Best of the Bay” TV and whose seafood earned “Culinary Hospitality Restaurant of the Year” by Santé Magazine, is directing all food activities for the mobile kitchen. The ChowderMobile will always have an on-site team that includes a manager and several cooks, depending upon the size and nature of the event.

Sam’s is eco-friendly, and uses sustainably-fished seafood according to the guidelines published by the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The cooking oil used for Sam’s famous fish and chips is cholesterol and trans-fat free which allows Sam’s to recycle it, and all packaging and utensils used on the ChowderMobile are 100% biodegradable and compostable.

Sam’s ChowderMobile is 24 feet long and lobster-red in color. It is custom-equipped with a top-of-the-line kitchen on wheels, with a grill, several burners, and two separate fryers – one for Fish and Chips and one for Fries. Lunch and dinner customers can find the Van’s current location by following it on Twitter @chowdermobile or by visiting www.samschowdermobile.com where there will be a live Twitter stream describing the Van’s current location. An events calendar will also be posted on the website, and currently includes the following Bay Area events:

  • July 31 – August 2: Santa Clara County Fair
  • August 7 – 9: San Jose Jazz Festival
  • August 15 – 23: San Mateo County Fair
  • September 18 – 20: Monterey Jazz Festival

New England Lobster Clambakes and Crab Feeds

Sam’s authentic New England style Lobster Clambakes are an east-coast tradition, and a favorite among customers of the restaurant. With Sam’s ChowderMobile, customers can now have them wherever they want – their home, office, or on the beach. A huge wooden steamer box is used to cook the Clambake, loaded with fresh whole Maine lobsters, clams, mussels, red potatoes, fresh corn on the cob and savory Andouille sausage, and layered with special Maine lobster seaweed. The box is covered in the traditional manner, with a special burlap tarp and steams for over an hour, bringing out the smoky sweetness of the shellfish. When the Lobster Clambake is complete, guests enjoy the excitement of the “unveiling” as the steam billows out and the seafood is poured into huge family style bowls in preparation for serving. The three-course feast begins with piping hot cups of Sam’s renowned Clam Chowder, made in the traditional New England style with natural ingredients including a light, savory clam broth, cream, clams, potatoes, smoked bacon, onion and thyme. Guests then serve themselves to the incredible seafood feast before them, ending with dessert of Key Lime Pie or watermelon.

Sam’s ChowderMobile Team

Shenkman, a Half Moon Bay resident, and his Partner and Executive Chef Lewis Rossman both hail from the East Coast, and have incorporated their remembrances of a true New England style family-friendly “fish house” experience and delivered it to both Sam’s Chowder House and now Sam’s ChowderMobile. Their backgrounds, coupled with Rossman’s remarkable skills in the kitchen, provide the definitive “Atlantic meets Pacific” seafood experience—straight-forward, sustainable seafood, using the freshest ingredients.

The team’s newest member, Juan Hurtado, will lead operations as Manager of Sam’s ChowderMobile. Hurtado is passionate about food and customer service, and brings a strong and diverse background to the team, from retail store management to technology sales to line cook. He hails most recently from Whole Foods Market, where he directed a team of 80 in the Prepared Foods Department. In his new role, he will direct the team in day-to-day operations, setting the highest standards for gourmet mobile seafood delivery.

Can California make a better lobster roll than Maine?

NBC's The Today Show

Can California make a better lobster roll than Maine?

Excerpted from September 20, 2007 article by Phil Lempert, Food Editor at NBC’s The TODAY Show

The idea of Sam’s lobster roll being THE sandwich sensation in Half Moon Bay, 20 minutes south of San Francisco, sounded a bit like a stretch. After all, I’ve tasted, and enjoyed, lobster rolls from Maine to the famous Lobster Roll (along the stretch of the highway between Amagansett and Montauk on Long Island). But I was pleasantly surprised.

The lobster roll at Sam’s Chowder House is different. It’s typical to have loads of mayo or another similar type of dressing surrounding mini nuggets of lobster on a toasted hot dog bun … but here in Half Moon Bay there is no mayo. There’s specially baked bread (which is then cut into hot-dog-bun rolls) and a delicate blend of herbs and diced celery. The lobster is lightly dressed with melted butter and in huge tender pieces. All in all, if you like lobster, there is no question that you will LOVE this sandwich.

Since Sam’s is right on the bay, with sailboats, foghorns and seagulls, you have the perfect setting for a delightful seafood eating experience. In fact, you might think that you were actually on the Northern shore of Maine, where fisherman will be dragging their daily catch from their boats to shore — but then the breathtaking West Coast sunset reminds you that you’re some three thousand miles away. Not only might Sam’s lobster roll be the Best Sandwich in America, but it also might make those New Englanders a bit jealous!

NBC's The Today Show Food Editor, Phil Lempert, awarded Sam's Lobster Roll a Top Five Sandwiches in America
